What better way to celebrate Wu-Tang’s 20 year anniversary than with the release of Wu-Sciples, a ten color print celebrating one of the rawest groups in music. This print has been a long time in the making for us at Two Rabbits. When we had the idea we knew only one person could illustrate it right, Adam Hathorn aka Honkey Kong. We were already major fans of Adams work. He has illustrated jobs for us, been a great host when we were in San Diego and he is one of the best tattoo artist we know. Adam is also Wu obsessed, like us. With that said here is Adam in his own words…

“So far as my memory takes me, my introduction to Wu Tang was when 36 chambers was released in 93. I had to wikipedia that, my memory is not that good. My friend Strobe Beats played me “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta Fuck Wit” on a walk man, or some shit, in the cafeteria. The beat made me wanna punch people, much like the hard core and punk rock music that I was listening to at the time. I immediately got a copy, and it was on constant rotation. That was what got me back into hip hop music. Previously I was listening to alot of Public Enemy and alot of the native tongue stuff, Tribe Called Quest, LONS, De La etc. After that hip hop was getting boring. I was young and turned to hard core music, especially in Boston where it thrived at that time. When Wu came with that raw sound with production that was stripped down and unpolished, it was an easy step back in. Wu Tang has been a huge part of music in my life since. I’m sure there’s been few days since that have passed without me hearing Wu in some form. I tattoo all day, or draw all day, so there’s some form of music always playing, and there’s plenty on shuffle.

I was lucky enough to be asked by the guys at Two Rabbits Studios to create the “Wu-sciples” print. Their idea was solid out ofthe gate. Wu Tang last supper with Big Baby Jesus front and center. I said sign me up. The illustration took a bit to do since they’re artist deep, but nonetheless a fun project. Thanks for choosing me to do this print, see you Saturday for the show….. 1st layer is white. Screen is locked and loaded.

We thought the white was going to be one of the hardest layers to print because of the large ink are, but it went pretty smooth.

Silver layer.

Silver was a good base for some overlapping in the next layers. We believe in as much bling as possible.

Light brown was 3rd. The browns proved the hardest to mix. Getting the right shade took a while.

Medium brown is layer 4.

Layer 5 the last of the browns.

Layer 6 dark red.

Racking the prints.

We wanted a really rich deep dark red.

Layer 8 Gold. Only Old Dirty himself gets the gold robe.

It wouldn’t be a Wu print without that yellow. Layer 8.

On Saturday, November 19, graffiti artist POSE and photojournalist KC Ortiz will unveil Whitewash, their second exhibition at Known Gallery, and their most cohesive to date.

For POSE, Whitewash references society’s attempt to eradicate graffiti and stifle human expression. “Shortly after I started writing graffiti, Chicago took an extremely hard-line stance on its eradication, outlawing the sale of spraypaint and implementing Mayor Dayley’s Graffiti Blasters program,” POSE explains.

With this exhibition, POSE will recall a time before the buff. “I am digging into my fondest childhood memories of riding the train and seeing all the colors, letters and cartoon characters along the lines. Making these paintings has been an incredibly rich process, and it makes me thankful that no city official can eradicate my memories.”

POSE will show 15 new works in the main gallery. The work is rendered in his signature style—aggressive, hand-painted collages of pop-culture icons and ephemera—but feature deeper abstractions and new mediums. “I have six paintings on Plexiglass that were kind of an experiment,” POSE explains. “I wanted to be challenged by a new medium and process.”

For KC, Whitewash is about the people and places he photographs. “Much of the work I do covers those who have been ‘whitewashed,’ so to speak, by history and policy,” KC notes. “Specifically, the work I will be exhibiting is from West Papua and Burma. You won’t find either of those ‘nations’ on the map, as both have been essentially ‘whitewashed’ away. Burma has been renamed Myanmar by its ruling junta in order to establish the fantasy of a unified nation, and West Papua has been occupied by Indonesia since 1963 after a very controversial handover from the Dutch that was orchestrated by the United States.”

In the project room, KC will show 12 photographs of West Papua and Burma’s armed struggles. “The struggles are unified in their nature under the theme of resistance, the victimhood of whitewashing by the world at large, the beauty of their people, and the strength of the human spirit and dignity,” KC notes.

About the artists:

POSE
Hailing from The Windy City, POSE has made an indelible mark on a multitude of cities around the globe. Best known for his progressive letter style and technical precision, POSE is an influential contributor to the contemporary graffiti movement, and his work has appeared in numerous magazines, books and films. POSE grew up a half block from the CTA’s elevated train line, and started sneaking out to practice graffiti there in 1992. Coming of age during the golden era of Chicago graffiti, POSE put in endless work on the streets. His prolific output led him to become a local legend, and the city’s most internationally recognized graffiti artist. In addition to his achievements in graffiti, POSE set out to conquer every medium visual art has to offer—both on and off the streets. His artistic exploration led him to become a jack of all creative trades, with successful endeavors in the commercial and fine art worlds. POSE currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. He is a member of the acclaimed West Coast artist collective The Seventh Letter, as well as a founder of his own Chicago based design and art firm We Are Supervision. He has traveled internationally on his own and with The Seventh Letter, specifically to showcase his skills as one of the best graffiti artists out there. Almost two decades into his artistic career, POSE shows no signs of slowing down.

KC Ortiz
KC Ortiz is an award-winning, self taught photojournalist with a split base between his hometown of Chicago, Illinois and Western Thailand. Ortiz’s work focuses on the world’s forgotten and overlooked people and issues. He has covered conflict throughout Southeast Asia, focusing on the human suffering and the policies that enable conflict, as well as humanitarian issues throughout the world. The aim of his photography is to bring awareness to the masses of those that are suffering most, often times completely unseen by the majority. His work has appeared in A-Magasinet, Global Post, Juxtapoz, Newsweek, Time, The Wall Street Journal, and many other publications across the globe. Ortiz’s work has been exhibited in a number of museums and galleries including The Newseum, The Corcoran, The Frontline Club, Known Gallery, Rivera and Rivera Gallery, Guerrero Gallery, and others. In 2011, Ortiz’s work was recognized with a first place award from the prestigious Pictures of The Year International.

Wilbur and His Hypnotic Gaze

Caldwell had a bulldog named Wilbur who possessed a hypnotic gaze that increased perception as well as causing slight bouts of madness. When Caldwell spent too much of his time staring at his dog, he went into a trance-like state, where he was able to see more than one dimension. He could see the spirits of the recently departed as well as visions of a possible future. He never made the connection that it was only through his dog’s gaze that he managed to see his visions. Convinced that it was his one eye that allowed for the “sight”, he took out an ad in the newspaper. He became an advocate for monocular vision and attracted a cult-like following.

Herman and Morris

Herman found his prized huntsman spider in the basement of his parents’ house. It followed him where ever he went for most of his adult life. He named it Morris because it reminded him of his Uncle Morris, who had long spindly legs and a strange gait that often confused people as to which direction he was about to step in.

Although it was common to have large insects as pets in this town, it was frowned upon to have an arachnid as a pet. When they would go for a stroll or take in a show at the theatre, Morris would hide in Herman's stovepipe hat and watch through tiny holes near the top of the hat band. Herman could even hear him clapping at the close of the each performance. It made him laugh out loud every time.

Oscar and the Truth Toad(Ted)

In 1895, a large toad broke into Oscar's house. This was not an uncommon occurrence for Devonshire in the summer of 1895. Fore there had been a plague of toads that season, thought to be brought on by a curse. There was always some curse or misplaced talisman causing mayhem in that town. This incident, however, was very unusual in that the toad was enormous. It was the size of pig and seemed to speak a kind of gibberish that sounded like a child trying to mimic a foreign language. It held Oscar hostage in his kitchen for several hours while it appeared to be trying to tell him something. As Oscar attempted to make his escape, the toad would “speak” louder and raise its slimy hands in fist-like gestures and a curious motion resembling throat slashing. As the sun started to come up, the toad threw its hands up as if in disgust and made itself a home in the study of the house. Oscar was both terrified and mesmerized by the experience and decided to keep the toad, . . .or more or less let it go about its business as he had no control over what it had in mind. He started to call it Ted because it seemed to utter that name at the end of every “sentence”.

As months passed, Oscar started to decipher the strange language that his toad was speaking. He also discovered that Ted had a very special talent. His presence compelled people to speak the truth. Oscar, who was not very trusting of people, began to carry Ted around on his head so that no one would be able to lie to him. From a distance it appeared that Oscar was wearing a large turban and passersby would be startled when the toad would suddenly snatch a bird in flight with its tongue. At first, Oscar was empowered by his new found ability to keep people honest and learn their secrets. It wasn’t long before Oscar became very lonely as his toad made everyone uncomfortable. Remorseful and tired of carrying around such a heavy load on his head, he convinced the toad to go back from whence it came, or so he thought. Ted was actually quite frustrated with Oscar and wanted to leave anyway. Ted was never heard from again and Oscar had to undergo a year of speech therapy to undo the strange gibberish that he acquired.

In this two part interview I will be talking to two of the South Bay of Los Angeles' best tattoo artists. Mike Suarez and Nick Alvarez. Growing up in the same town, I have heard their names and witnessed their works many times. Finding out that they had opened their own private studio in Torrance was a great surprise so I would like to introduce you to the artists behind 77TATTOO .

I met Nick Alvarez in San Diego at Guru Tattoo of all places. It is funny because we grew up in the same neighborhood with the same friends. Me being on the older end of things, faded out of the social scene to pursue work and family has a lot to do with the late intro, but I am glad to have met this talented and respectable artist. Here is more about NIck in his own words:

I'm Nick Alvarez.. born and raised in the South Bay (Torrance).. I've always been a beach kid, it's hard for me to leave the ocean. I've lived in a few different places in the last 10 years..

Love to travel. I was in the Navy at one point, stationed in Japan.. That's where I first started getting into tattooing. I was getting tattooed, it was kind of a military thing.. and since I lived in Japan I was taking advantage of getting work done there by this guy Edo, about an hour out of Tokyo. I love Japanese and Chinese art work.. I've been attracted to the style since I was a kid.. and the longer I was in Japan, the more I liked Japanese tattoo work.

So, before I knew it I was tattooing out of the barracks and hanging out at Edo's Tattoo Shop out in town on whatever free time I had. He wanted to help me out.. So I just watched him tattoo a lot..

Then he had me drawing designs and scratching them into card board with needles on running machines. He ordered supplies for me and told me to draw every day.. He told me to practice by tattooing a lot of fucking legs! Once I was back home in LA, I met Mike Suarez who had been tattooing all of my friends. I couldn't wait to meet him.. His tattoos where on another level. He was a big influence on me and helped me out as well.. He kind of took me under his wing.. He really showed me what GOOD tattooing is. I went to Union Electric Tattoo to get a real apprenticeship from Big 5, since I had never worked out of a professional shop. He hired me on the spot as a Tattooer and taught me whatever little things I hadn't learned.

My passion for Tattooing grew.. before I knew it I was tattooing full time and getting tattooed in my free time.. my life became Tattooing and I couldn't get enough. Eventually I made my way to Guru Tattoo in San Diego. I fucking love those guys. They opened my eyes.. I couldn't be more inspired. Such great artists and so humble..

I still make my way to SD to work with the guys at Guru from time to time. I can't get enough of that place, I try to work 2 or 3 days there every month or two. We were like a family there. After 3 years full time at Guru, I had to make my way back to LA.

We wanted to get my wife Cissy's apprenticeship started with Mike Suarez.. Mike and I also have been talking about opening a small appointment only shop together for the past couple years.. Strictly bad ass tattoos!

Now the three of us are together.. I'm inspired everyday, by both Mike and Cissy. I have opened myself up to trying new things, different styles of tattooing.. Mike blows my mind, he does it all.. any style.. but the thing is, he does it really fucking good. Cissy finished her apprenticeship this week and I can't believe she's pulling off tattoos as well as she is. I wasn't that good for my first few years.. and her paintings are unreal.. I'm still not that good. So I'm not lacking any inspiration, thats for sure. I love working next to the two of them.. 77 Tattoo in Torrance..

I taught a painting seminar out there, met a ton of great people, Got to hang out with my friend and publisher Brett Bryan and stay with my friend and long time favorite tattoo artist Joe Capobianco. At the same time I didn't do a good job of taking picture, but luckily my friend Carlos East was there with his camera skills and filled me in on aspects of my trip. "The Fighter" and Micky Ward

"Why are you doing a post about a movie that has already come out and is already on netflix Greg?" Well to answer that, simply, I've got a cool little story related to Oscar award winning movie that I would like to share. Last year I was part of Gallery 1988's show and marketing promotion for the film "The Fighter". As part of the show, a few of us artists including Dabs and Myla, Brandi Milne, Graham Curran, and Peek-a-boo Monster, were asked to paint on a couple of boxing gloves to be on display at the event following the private screening of the movie. It was a good time and I enjoyed the movie to say the least. Flash forward to about a month ago at the Crazy 4 Cult book signing I ran into Mickey Worsnup, the owner of one of the gloves I painted "Float like a... Sting like a...". Here is his story about this painted glove.

While working in Marketing at Paramount Pictures I was fortunate enough to get to work on THE FIGHTER. I am a boxing fan and have been a fan of Micky Ward since his fighting days- so it was a very cool opportunity to get to work on the film. I oversaw the online creative marketing efforts for the film which included working with Gallery 1988 to put together the awesome art event. I was extra stoked when Jensen said that you would be doing a piece. It was, of course, badass – and I had to have it- so I bought it as soon as it was available. Regarding the signature- once I had the glove it just sorta dawned on me the potential awesomeness of getting Micky to sign it. The only opportunity to get it done was the day of the 2011 Academy Awards. He and Dicky were at the Four Seasons prior to being taken over to the awards. I stood in the lobby for at least an hour waiting for them to come down. The place was a mad house as pretty much everyone was dealing with Academy actors and talent. I had the glove hidden in a bag and just had to stand around by the elevators like I was suppose to be there. Finally I was able to intercept them on the way out and get Micky to sign the glove and take a picture with me. He was obviously overwhelmed with the craziness of the day but was beyond cool, obliged my request and complimented the glove before being whisked away. The glove was in the room later that night as we watched Christian Bale win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and they showed Micky and Dicky’s reaction. ‘Twas very cool.

So I thought I would post a few interim works for you all to check out. For some reason, I have never been able to take an kind of time off, I work myself to exhaustion before a show, and then sleep in the next day and start painting all over again. I think it is just an obsession, but I also really like working on paintings. This year has been no different so once I finished "Story Teller" I immediately got into a couple paintings that I had personally wanted to do before I even began work on INLE.

So first off I love dogs, all kinds of them, I used to work at a kennel washing dogs as part of my preveterinary medicine classes I began taking (but obviously didn't continue as a career in are just made more sense). It made perfect sense to have a go at paintng my favorite French Bulldog of all time, Tango!

It was a great experience getting to paint a dog that I knew for once and had a sense of his personality.
Next I was able to work on a painting for Comedy Centrals recent South Park Show entitled "Kenny Angel". It was an honor being invited to be part of Ron English's selected artists for the show. I've looked up to the man for years and he is a true legend.

Growing up and being in high school in the early 90's I spent many a day lisening to Pearl Jam and Temple of the Dog on my walkman, so getting asked to do an Eddie Vedder tour poster was a no brainer, and I am so stoked to be a part of the artist roster including Jeff Soto, Munk One, and Roland Tamayo on this run.

And of course there was this piece which for me sums up a boyhood dream of mine to create a Watership Down piece. You know, I have been hiding "Inle" and 280 (the page in my copy of the book which tells the story of the black rabbit of Inle´) for years, probably from my early teens. Being able to curate this show and see a bunch of my favorite artists take on it was surreal and a memory I will get to hold onto for a long time.

With all of those pieces done months ago, I embarked on an ambitious body of work that is keeping me busy as usual and challenging at the same time. I am stoked to be teaming up with my friend Lola for this new exhibition and you'll have to stay tuned for more info on that ;)

Friday night was the opening of the "INLE" group exhibit I curated and it was such an awesome night full of great people, amazing artists and incredible artwork. I'm still recovering from this week in anticipation of this show but wanted to share some pics (sorry some of them aren't very clear and I have "bright eyes" (not red eyes) in most of them...)

Chase Tafoya Interview

So a few years ago I had the pleasure of connecting with Chase Tafoya. He was working on a solo exhibition in which he was painting his artist peers as portraits. I was surprised and honored to learn that he was doing a painting of me for the show. I also was stoked to see all the "Watership Down" reference that he added to the piece. It was almost a premonition to this show so many years in the future.
You can see chases work in a variety of arenas, check out his website here and some of the paintings below. But what blows my mind is his superb mastery of acrylics which is the medium I use as well, but man for the life of me I can't get them to look like that! So I will be happy to sit back and enjoy the richly rendered blends and invite you to eavesdrop on a little conversation I recently had with Chase:

GS: Okay, so lets get the nitty gritty done, where are you from and when were you born. I know, pretty basic but a good place to start

CT: All good bro. I was born in the small town of Merced, California. I've lived allover the state, but have recently moved back. It's a good place to stay focused. I was born August 14, 1983

GS: I read in an interview that you started making art at an early age, around 3 or so like myself. Did you find that it was just something you've been gravitating to all your life and were your parents supportive?

CT: Yes sir. I started drawing at 3 and have been doing it everyday since... literally. That's cool you started at 3 also. I read that most creative types start at age 3. Pretty crazy.

GS: Yeah man, I am not trying to be the pushy father or anything, but I brought my 3 year old son into the studio this weekend, gave him a panel and some selected paints and brushes and let him go at it. He sat painting focused for a good hour. I've never seen him sit still for so long.

CT: Yes. I feel a desire to constantly create. I started painting at 17, and each piece I approach to evoke an emotion, or embed a message with. Its a feeling that I believe only another artist can relate to. My parents were very influential in my art. Growing up they got me those little wooden art briefcases, instead of toys, for Christmas. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for their support.

Ha ha that's rad! I'm sure its encoded in your son to be an artist too. My mom and dad both painted, and they would sit with me for hours as we created art. My pops used to draw the Ratfink character, so that was the first thing I really knew how to draw. Good times are right around the corner for you and boy to create and do art together!

GS: That's Awesome your parents are artists too and so supportive. Pretty rad your dad exposed you to Rat Fink, I had to find out about him on my own. I was super stoked when you agreed to be in the show. I am also curious if you have an attachment to the story "Watership Down" previous to the invitation, which I think I know the answer to but just for our readers.

CT: Dude, It's an honor for me to be a part of it! I was stoked when I got the invitation. O yeah, I have a great attachment to the story. I grew up watching the movie, and later in my life I picked up the book. I love the hidden undertones, and symbology in it. I know it influenced my work, and its a story that was ahead of its time. As an artist, I'm constantly reminded to keep pushing the envelope and overcome my artistic struggles. A little deep, sorry. ha ha

GS: no, I agree the story is timeless and about pushing through oppression and defeating evil to just live a better life. The dark undertones grabbed my rebellious side as a kid which is why I was so interested in the character of The Black Rabbit of Inle´, but as I got older I realized that he just represented what was inevitable and really made me think what is on the other side of death.

CT: I greatly agree. Death will eventually come knocking, calling, or in this case.... hopping.

GS: Tell me about the piece you submitted for the show, It is a beautiful piece and I know you select your subjects for various reasons. Who is the model and how did it go selected the elements you wanted to include in the piece?

CT: Thanks man that means a lot. My piece is basically my version of the black rabbit of Inle, or "Death". Most cultures see Death as this skeletal type figure with a sickle, or an old man with a beard. As I started researching more, I found out that allover the world different cultures have a Death character, and some included women. A banshee in Irish Folklore is an example of this. The story goes, that the banshee disguises herself as a beautiful woman, and seduces you into getting close to her. As you approach, she takes your life. The model I used is Anita Varvatos, and I felt was the best example for conveying this. The butterflies that hover above her head, in my painting, are believed to be a persons soul in Japanese Mythology. So I saw this woman being surrounded by the souls she has collected. The crane is symbol for death in other cultures, so I added a crane with its wings fully spread and close to her, so she could appear to be an angel. More like the angel of death. In Watership Down, the black rabbit appears in the dark, when the moon is out, so I painted a dark cemetery background with a full moon. She also has tattoos on her hands of an hourglass, a sickle, and other symbols for death, or something coming to an end. She also wears rosary beads, with a lucky rabbits foot on the end. Perhaps a gook luck charm for herself?

GS: Wow, incredible research my friend on an incredible piece. Your attention to detail is phenomenal and it's a refreshing take on this theme. You all should do yourselves a favor and come down to Gallery 1988 Los Angeles this Friday night to see this piece by Chase Tafoya and so many more by your favorite artists from around the globe. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me Chase, I appreciate it.

I've always admired Josh Keyes work as many of you have and am totally honored to have him as part of the "Inle´" exhibition. Here is some great coverage that Jensen at Gallery 1988 has on his blog about Josh's amazing contribution to the exhibition:

"Josh Keyes is one of those universally loved artists, and for good reason. I remember maybe 5 years ago, when LA Weekly had Josh do an illustration for their cover (CONGRATS to them, because they were EARLY!), and it absolutely stunned me. He was about to show at Fecal Face in SF, and it was obvious this guy's talent was going to end up on some serious walls. And it has. Words aren't going to help explain how beautiful this piece is, the picture above does that perfectly well for itself already. But here are some words directly from Josh Keyes about the acrylic on board piece -

"This was influenced partly by Richard Adams Plague Dogs as well as the Inle character from Watership Down.

The products depicted in the painting are made by companies that continue to test on laboratory animals including rabbits.

The crows are in the shape of Inle and I though Black Angels was fitting in that though the act and natural behavior of carrion birds and other scavenger animals is disturbing (to us) it is part of the natural cycle of life. I see the crows as an active agent of liberation, freeing the lab animals bodies from a life of torment and by consuming and breaking down the body the animal is absorbed into the energy of the life cycle."

Again, I won't be able to say something better than the piece does, or Josh did himself. Just wanted you to see it."

After planning this exhibit for over a year, I can't believe it's right around the corner. I'm honored to have such a fine group of artists contribute to their talent to the INLE exhibit I'm curating at Gallery: 1988: LA on March 11th.

Who or what is INLE?

In 1974, Richard Adam's wrote the beloved classic "Watership Down". It is a tale about overcoming the obstacles of life that try to beat you into submission and coming out on top, told through the unlikely embodiment of rabbits. Upon reading the book at a young age, one particular thread stood out to me. The story of "The Black Rabbit of Inle". It was on page 280 of this book that my Grandfather had gotten for me on a road trip that the story of Inle´ unfolds. The fear he induced in the rabbits who told tales of him is not much unlike our own fears of death and what is unknown. I always questioned was their fear based upon him or the inevitability of their own demise, and was it something to fear or welcome after a long life lived? With this book began my over 24 year obsession with using rabbits as a tool in my art. Upon relating my memories of this book with some artist friends of mine, I wasn't surprised to find they had similar attachments to the story and subsequent movie and that it too was a huge influence on their work.

The question is asked over and over "what inspires you and your art?". Well here is one aspect, and In my attempt to keep this story alive and in honor of Richard Adam's timeless story we are proud to present "INLE".
