"The Grotesque Menageries of Greg Simkins"

By Nancy Hightower:

Monsters are tricky things. We love them, fear them, need them, despise them when they invade our dreams a little too often. Their ubiquitous and yet marginalized presence in our lives rests on the contradictory emotions elicited by such creatures. Jeffrey Jerome Cohen writes “The monster’s body quite literally incorporates fear, desire, anxiety and fantasy (ataractic or incendiary), giving them life and uncanny independence” (4).  This “uncanny independence” means that we are not as in control of the monster as we would like to be, that often they can crawl, jump, or slither through the linguistic fence of Otherness and into our world.  Cohen states that “[t]hrough the body of the monster fantasies of aggression, domination, and inversion are allowed safe expression in a clearly delimited and permanently liminal space.  Read more....

Wall Time with Werk

So it isn't often that I get to paint walls these days, and even more rare that I get to hang out with my good friend Werk. So when the opportunity presented itself to paint at South Bay Customs this last weekend, I had to take them up on it. South Bay customs by the way is an amazing shop, do yourselves a favor and  check it out HERE. My good buddy Kingston put this video together for me to highlight the day, so a big thanks to him for his time and hard work. Check his photography out HERE.
Thanks to Juxtapoz for posting this too.

American Art Collector

I just wanted to thank Josh Rose and the people at American Art Collector for including this teaser interview in this months issue for my show "Cloud Theory" happening this April 21st at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. An even better reason to come out to the show is that my friend Johnny KMNDZ Rodriguez will also be unveiling his new Solo Show. click the link and check out his amazing work.

A big thanks goes out to my friend Birdman for allowing me to use this great photo he had taken at my studio for American Art Collector Magazine. Birdman has been putting in tons of footwork making the rounds and becoming one of the most prolific and stand out art photographers around. He has covered everything from graffiti to street art to fine art and has been able to capture the attitude and personalities of the artists who make masterpieces we all enjoy. So my hat is off to this guy for all his hard work and his generous giving of himself and his time and even putting himself in harms way to document this moment in time.

Empt Kingdom Interview

New interview up at Empty Kingdom - thanks for a fun interview guys!

Greg Simkins everybody!  That’s right, GREG SIMKINS.  His thoughts.  His words.  Hiiiiiiis other stuff.  Like the army of mechanized G.I. Joebots that Greg has in the cellar of his house.  They’re painstakingly crafted to fit in with other G.I. Joes so the regular Joes won’t recognize them until it’s too late and Greg has taken over the world by subverting the minds of our children.  In like 30 years.  Read on my friends.
